Montgomery County Public Libraries Hosts"Meet the Author" Programs Featuring Local Writers

Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) will host three “Meet the Author” programs in October featuring local authors.

On Wednesday, October 13 at 7 p.m., Olga Grushin, author of “The Line” and “The Dream Life of Sukhanov,” will be at the Silver Spring Library, 8901 Colesville Rd.

Grushin’s first novel, “The Dream Life of Sukhanov,” won the 2007 New York Public Library Young Lions Fiction Award and was chosen as a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and a Washington Post Top Ten Best Book of the Year. Her second novel, “The Line,” published in April 2010, was chosen as an Editors' Choice book by The New York Times. She is now at work on her third book.

On Saturday, October 16 at 2 p.m., novelist and short story writer Dolen Perkins-Valdez will be at Marilyn J. Praisner Library, 14910 Old Columbia Pike, Burtonsville for a reading and book signing of her debut novel, “Wench.”

Olney Farmer's and Artists Market

Come out to the Olney's Farmer's Market this Sunday for fresh produce, exceptional artists displaying/selling their work, and outstanding food & gift vendors, along with live music!

Yin Yang Yoga Center's First Live Music Yoga Fundraiser

Ying Yang Yoga is offering a full 1 hour class accompanied by the yogic vibes of various artists from the local area. 

Come experience vinyasa flow with live sound from around the world.

All proceeds from the nights event will be given to Bita's Run for Wellness: A 5K Benefit Run/Walk on Nov.20th in Olney, raising funds to support cancer patients in the local area. For more information on Bita's Run and how to register, please go to www.bitasrun.org

Community Night Next Wednesday

Community Night is just one week away.  This year's Community Night will be held next Wednesday, October 6 from 5:00-8:30 p.m. at Longwood Recreation Center.  The event is shaping up to be another great event highlighting local businesses to the greater Olney community.  Your business can still participate as an exhibitor, raffle or silent auction donor, or volunteer.  Please call the Chamber office at 301.774.7117 with your registration information, raffle or silent auction donation or time you can volunteer.

Montgomery Parks Annual Harvest Festival

Join the Montgomery County Department of Parks, part of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission for some down-home fun on the farm during the annual Harvest Festival. Sample life on the farm from the 1850s to the present. Families and attendees will enjoy tinsmithing, pumpkin painting, chestnut roasting, scarecrow making, live farm animals, such as chickens, pigs and goats, games and food.  Also featured will be antique farm equipment, gardening talks and demonstrations, live music and more. Admission is $10 per car, which includes parking.

Civil War Bus Tour

There is still room on the bus for the Civil War tour on Saturday September 18.

Traveling by comfortable motor coach and guided by Sharon Holt, Museum director and  Civil War historian, Museum members will explore the importance of railroad and canal transport on the local economy, visit Harper's Ferry, scene of John Brown's raid as well as the skirmish that helped turn the tide for the Union at Antietam, and then arrive at the Antietam battlefield.  There, we will enjoy a customized tour of Antietam led by staff from Frederick's National Museum of Civil War Medicine.  We will then journey to Frederick for a reception, dinner, and entertainment in the Medicine museum's historic building, before returning to Sandy Spring.

Award Winning Chefs of Riderwood to Give Cooking Demo

Saturday, August 29, at 11am, the award winning chefs of the Riderwood Continuing Care Retirement Community are showing you how to cook like a pro!

The chefs – Executive Chef Victor Cirrincione, Chef de Cuisine Marta Munoz and Chef de Cuisine Frank Clyatt -- are the defending winners of the Maryland Seafood Festival’s “Best Vegetable Crab Soup”  recipe. They will cook  Capellini (or Angel Hair Pasta),  Sautéed Garden Vegetables and Escarole & Beans with Pasta at the Olney event.

The event will be held at the Olney Farmers and Artists Market, which is located at Route 108 and Prince Phillip Drive, next to the Montgomery General Hospital Thrift Shop. Come get the opportunity to get  cooking lessons from the experts.
